Immutable off-site copies
Backup copies are written to isolated S3-compatible object storage, helping protect them from accidental deletion, ransomware and compromised accounts.

What to know before adding Microsoft 365 backup.
Is this the same as Microsoft 365 retention?
No. Retention and recycle-bin features help with short-term recovery, but they are not the same as an independent off-site backup copy with its own schedule and retention settings.
What does the 1 TB allowance cover?
The allowance is backup storage per protected mailbox, pooled across the tenant, and can cover that user's Exchange, OneDrive and SharePoint backup data.
Can a single email or file be restored?
Yes. The service is designed for granular restores, so individual messages, calendar items, files or Teams items can be recovered without restoring everything.
Does this replace server or VPS backups?
No. This protects Microsoft 365 data specifically. It should sit alongside server, VPS or workstation backups, not replace them.
